five string violins
A five string violin extends the range of the violin downwards by a 5th, adding a C string at the bottom and thus encompassing the range of a violin and a viola at the same time.
Five string violins are well-suited to violinists with smaller hands who want to add an extra dimension to their playing, but don't feel comfortable playing on a viola-sized scale length.
Five string violins are becoming popular - a 5 string fiddle tradition is evolving amongst folk fiddle players, bluegrass and jazz players, and five string instruments are also used by experimental, rock and orchestral violinists.
All our violins are supplied with a fabric covered hard foam case.
5 String Violin £800 SOLD
This instrument is built on a violin-sized string and body length, but its body is deeper than a traditional violin's would be. This provides more support to the C string, which on a violin-sized body can sometimes sound weak on a five string instrument.
The result is a darker toned five string violin - its sound has some of the richness and bass that you'd expect from a viola, plus a violin-like upper register. It's the ideal instrument for someone who is used to playing on a violin-length scale, or has smaller hands.
