five string electric violin

A 5 String electric Violin, by Jon Oxley

£450

English handmade electric "Dancing Bone" five string violin, originally purchased for £675 in 1997. The violin was made by UK luthier Jon Oxley, and is a beautifully made instrument with a flamed maple body.

The name "Dancing Bone" comes from this instrument's use of a pseudo-soundpost. It has a small soundboard under the bridge, which is connected to rest of the instrument's body by a small bone-like piece of white plastic. This gives it a more lively and natural acoustic sound than a regular solid bodied electric.

The current bridge-mounted pickup system could probably be improved. Buyers are welcome to discuss fitting a custom Violorama pickup system to this instrument.

The instrument is tuned with guitar tuners, which allow precision tuning without the need for fine adjusters. These are mounted at the chin end, and the instrument is designed so that all the weight is at this end of its body, with a minimal scroll, so there is much reduced weight at the top of the fingerboard.

It comes with a small-sized shoulder rest which fits its narrow body size, and a case.
