As well as stocking standard shaped violins, Violorama sells a custom smooth bodied violin and viola design, made to our own specifications. These instruments, as well as having attractive and unusual looks, are optimised for a rich, smooth tone which is warmer and rounder than that of many standard shaped violins and violas.
The smooth body shape is also beneficial in that it maximises bowing room - no more bumping the right hand on the corners of the instrument.
We are currently experimenting with varnish colours, and have several instruments in stock which are finished in a blonde varnish with just a hint of green. We think these instruments stand out from the norm, without resorting to the garish bright colours currently popular on cheap student violins.
Other unusual features that you might find on our instruments are:
Custom peg box
This is designed to make string-changing much easier, and to stop the strings being stretched over the top of each other in the usual jumble that can often occur on standard violins and violas
Knilling Perfection pegs
These geared pegs do away with the need for fine adjusters, which can weigh down the tailpiece and dampen the tone of a violin or viola. Their smooth action comes as a relief if you’ve ever struggled with cranking traditional pegs up and down, and the 4:1 planetary gear system means that you can tune accurately and easily.

reducing the weight of the violin or viola, at the pegbox end where it matters most. Compensates for the weight of the extra peg on a 5 string.
Dyneema tailgut
This reduces the pressure on the top of the violin. This reduces damping, which can make some instruments sound dull, and allows the top to vibrate more. The result is a livelier sounding instrument.
